[2P25]Bridging behavior of carbon nanotube filaments in vacuum

Gas discharge generated between a pair of metal plate electrodes covered with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) creates many carbon nanotube filaments bridging between the electrodes. The CNT filaments can be applied to sensors, such as a vacuum gauge. However, their mechanical strength is currently extremely low, making those applications difficult. In this study, we examined effect of applied voltage to the electrodes on behavior of CNF filaments bridging them to find a condition to maintain the CNT filaments with sufficient mechanical strength. Our results suggest that an optimum applied voltage exists for maintaining the number of filaments bridging the electrodes under vacuum conditions. Under vacuum conditions, both higher and lower applied voltages resulted in a reduction in the number of filaments
