[2P28]Co-evaporation of oligothiophene molecules: formation of nanowires and periodic thin films

The formation and electronic properties of unsubstituted oligothiophenes on Cu(111) and Si(111)-√3×√3-Ag surfaces were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. On Cu(111), oligothiophenes (4T–8T) form characteristic nanowires. On Si(111)-√3×√3-Ag, 8T and 5T form highly ordered thin films. Co-evaporation of 8T and 5T yields independent nanowires on Cu(111), whereas it produces periodic stripe structures on Si(111)-√3×√3-Ag. By tuning the 8T:5T molar ratio (1:1 and 2:1), we successfully controlled the periodic row arrangements (1:1 and 2:1 alternating rows). These findings demonstrate structural control of co-evaporated organic thin films for well-defined hetero-molecular interfaces.
