[3D07]Analysis and Applications of Solid-Liquid Interfaces for Energy Conversion

Solid-liquid interfaces govern charge transfer and ion transport in electrochemical energy conversion. We use scanning probe microscopy (SPM) in liquid to characterize these interfaces atomically. SPM revealed that confined water in hydration layers has markedly different from bulk. SPM studies of electrode materials showed interface states strongly influences surface exposed to the electrolyte. We applied the concepts to new interfacial reactions at electrode and electrolyte interface. These findings offer a firm basis for designing next-generation energy material.
