In other countries, academic detailing (AD) by pharmacists has been conducted for 40 years as an attempt to optimize individual prescriptions by physicians, and in countries such as the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, pharmacists have established their current position of responsibility for medication. In Japan, we have finally reached a situation where the prescription proposals made by pharmacists to physicians before prescriptions are issued are being evaluated in terms of medical fees. Thus, in this symposium, we would like to think about the future of pharmaceutical education in Japan by reporting on attempts to promote academic detailing that makes use of basic pharmaceutical science in clinical practice, with the aim of achieving a future in which pharmacists can demonstrate even greater expertise.
First, from the perspective of basic pharmaceutical researchers, we will hear reports on the circumstances and background of those who have started academic detailing in pharmaceutical education, as well as their experiences in developing academic detailing materials to apply basic pharmaceutical science to clinical practice. We will also hear about attempts to change the future of pharmacists, such as practical research on academic detailing conducted in collaboration with academic detailers from the perspective of clinical faculty members.
