Talk Title: Combining Physics and Biology in Underwater Acoustics

Biography: Doug Cato is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Geosciences and the Marine Studies Institute at the University of Sydney. Most of his career has been in Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Organisation and before that the Royal Australian Navy Research Laboratory. He has decades of research experience in underwater acoustics in both the physical and biological aspects. His research has included the mechanisms of sound generation by sea surface motion, the contribution of biological noise, particularly choruses, to ambient noise, marine animal acoustic communication and the effects of noise on marine mammals. He developed the ambient noise prediction model for the Indo-Pacific region around Australia, integrating the physical and biological components. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the Australian Acoustical Society.

Talk Title: Good enough? Balancing model complexity and practicality in passive acoustic marine mammal tracking

Biography: Eva-Marie Nosal is a Professor and Graduate Chair in the Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Her multidisciplinary academic background includes a PhD in Geology and Geophysics, as well as degrees in Applied Mathematics. She has extensive research experience in marine bioacoustics, specifically focusing on localization and the automated tracking of multiple marine mammals using wide-baseline passive acoustic arrays. Her work involves developing advanced frameworks to monitor species such as sperm whales, fin whales, and humpback whales. In addition to her research, she is the Chair of the Hawai'i Chapter of the Marine Technology Society and frequently serves on organizing and technical committees for international acoustic conferences.
