概要
This session focuses on the emerging practice of “COIL for Staff” and examines its potential as a new methodology for faculty and staff development in support of institutional internationalization. In line with the theme of SIIEJ 2026, it extends the COIL method—traditionally developed as a form of international education for students—into a framework for cross-border professional learning and organizational capacity-building among university faculty and staff. In particular, it considers how a COIL-based approach can create shared learning opportunities across the institution, rather than treating internationalization as the concern of only a limited number of specialized offices. Drawing on examples from CEU Cardenal Herrera University and the University of Florida, the session introduces “COIL for Staff” as a dialogic and collaborative framework in which university personnel connect online with counterparts at overseas institutions to learn together about internationalization, support systems, intercultural responsiveness, work design, and digital practices. If feasible, colleagues from these institutions will also join online to share the background, design, achievements, and challenges of their initiatives. The session will also present a proposed Tech-Augmented COIL for Staff initiative under JIGE, designed to foster digital skills, intercultural competence, and understanding of work redesign in the age of AI. Through this discussion, the session aims to propose a new FD/SD model and offer practical insights for strengthening the organizational foundations of internationalization in Japanese higher education.
