The representation of ice-phase processes in numerical models requires better understanding of the ice particle microphysics in relation to the environment. In recent years, theoretical simulations of the lidar backscatter properties from nonspherical ice particles have progressed based on the Physical Optics and modified Geometrical Optics Integral Equation methods to classify different cloud particle categories. Here, we present detailed analysis of these cloud particle categories and aerosol properties to identify processes related to ice formation from A-train observations. The Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite will provide global observation of in-cloud vertical air motion with Doppler Cloud Profiling Radar. This information will be combined with the present cloud-aerosol analysis to further understand the ice cloud formation and dissipation processes.
