In 2022, Demuth & al. presented a silica phase separated optical fiber (PSOF) using a glass developed by Corning Inc. By using phase separated glasses, it is possible to obtain a random structure with two glasses with different refractive indices at once. Thus, it becomes possible to obtain Transversely Disordered Optical Fibers (TDOF) by skipping the stack-and-draw approach, making it easy to scale the process to an industrial level.
Even so, the problem of PSOF is that, while it is possible to fiber the nucleated phase-separated glasses, their elongated length is short. That makes it so that the longitudinal direction of the fiber is not invariant as it is in a conventional TDOF. To remedy this problem, having a high refractive index difference between both separated glasses is important, as it will increase the light confinement. For this, tellurite glasses have a high linear refractive index range and are a material of choice. Previous research showed that the TeO2-B2O3 system shows glass phase separation in tellurite glasses is possible. This makes this system a solid base for creating PSOF, as there is a need for binary phased glasses.
This work shows our progress in creating tellurite PSOF based on this phase separated glass
