[11教-ポ-03] The Perceptions of University Students on Learning Sports Officiating through the Student-Designed Games ModeStudent-Designed Games in Sports Officiating

Sports officiating is an important course within university physical education and kinesiology programs, aimed at developing students’ referee knowledge and fundamental operational skills across various sports. To enhance students’ engagement, enjoyment, and collaborative abilities in this course, the present study introduced the innovative Student-Designed Games (SDG) model as an alternative to traditional direct instructional approaches. Given that empirical research examining the application of the SDG model in university-level sport-related professional courses remains limited, gaining an in-depth understanding of students’ experiences and perceptions is essential for identifying both the strengths and limitations of the model. Therefore, this study adopted an exploratory approach to examine students’ perceptions of a sports officiating course implemented using the SDG model. The participants were 46 undergraduate students from a department of physical education and kinesiology at a university in Taiwan. Five SDG-based instructional sessions were conducted over a 16-week period, and data were collected through participatory observation and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicated that students perceived improvements in effort, enjoyment, and cooperation, noting that substantial effort was required to collaboratively design appropriate officiating games, that the process of designing and participating in these games was enjoyable, and that both activities relied on a high level of cooperation among group members. At the same time, students identified several limitations, including insufficient depth of professional officiating knowledge and unequal distribution of workload within groups. Overall, this study highlights the potential of the SDG model as a pedagogical approach for enhancing student learning in sports officiating courses, while also discussing possible directions for future application and refinement. The findings may serve as a reference for sports officiating education in university settings.
