Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) have excellent mechanical properties and a high strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for replacing conventional metals in automotive structures for lightweighting. Galvanized steel (GS) is extensively used in automotive bodies due to its corrosion resistance. Therefore, CFRTP-GS hybrid joining technology is highly attractive for the automotive industry. Induction heating direct joining (IHDJ) was employed to achieve CFRTP-GS joints, utilizing localized, high-speed heating via electromagnetic induction, allowing the polymer to melt and bond with the treated metal surface without damage to fibers and materials. The surface treatment of metal is crucial in joining technology. To enhance the surface condition of GS, a hot water treatment (HWT) was applied, generating needle-like nanostructures by simply immersing GS in hot water (75 °C for 20 minutes) without damaging the galvanized layer. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of HWT in promoting CFRTP-GS bonding. The effects of different water pH levels on joining strength were compared. The treated-GS's surface structure and chemical state were analyzed using SEM and XPS, while the bonding interface was characterized using TEM-EELS and AFM-IR. The results demonstrated that HWT effectively enhances the anchoring effect and chemical bonding between CFRTP and GS, improving joining strength.
