Background / Context
As societies face increasingly complex challenges, stronger connections between science and society are essential. While science diplomacy is often associated with international cooperation, many contemporary challenges require dialogue, trust-building, and collaboration across a wider range of boundaries—between science and policy, science and society, science and media, as well as across disciplines, generations, and cultures. Young academies have emerged as important platforms where early- and mid-career researchers engage across these boundaries and contribute to societal challenges.
Key Issues or Challenges
Despite the growing importance of scientific knowledge, gaps remain between researchers, policymakers, communities, media, and the public. Young researchers often have limited opportunities to engage in these interfaces. In addition, women researchers and scholars from diverse backgrounds continue to face barriers to visibility, leadership, and participation. More inclusive spaces for dialogue and collaboration are therefore needed.
Approach / Perspective
This presentation introduces the activities of the Young Academy of Japan as examples of how young academies foster dialogue, trust-building, and collaboration across boundaries. It highlights initiatives connecting researchers with policymakers, local communities, media professionals, and international networks. Through these activities, young researchers develop leadership and communication skills while contributing to society beyond their disciplinary expertise.
