Raising children with special needs imposes substantial psychological and emotional burdens on mothers, often leading to elevated stress levels and diminished quality of life. Unlike parents of typically developing children, these mothers encounter complex and multidimensional stressors that significantly impact their mental health and family well-being

To assess the level of mental stress and QoL among these mothers and identify associated sociodemographic
factors.

A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2024 to June 2025 among 250 mothers of children with special needs residing in Dhaka city. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were collected through a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire, utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to measure stress levels and the WHOQoL-BREF scale to assess quality of life. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to analyze associations between socio-demographic and stress-related variables

Among the respondents, 53.2% experienced moderate stress, 34.0% reported high stress, and only 12.8% had low stress levels. A large majority (75.2%) of mothers reported poor QoL, whereas only 2.8% enjoyed a good QoL. Autism was identified as the most prevalent condition among the children. Statistically significant associations were found between mental stress and factors such as age group, occupation, education level, number of children, type of special needs, and monthly family income. Quality of life was significantly associated with marital status, occupation, education, type, and age of the special needs child.

The majority of mothers experienced moderate-to-high stress and poor QoL. These results highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions focusing on stress management, self-care,
psychosocial support, and family-centered education to enhance maternal mental health and overall well-being.
