[Purpose] The growth and yield of seven sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas L.) genotypes were assessed for early maturity under rain-fed conditions during the 2014 and 2015 seasons at the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Nigeria, on a degraded ultisol
[Method]The experiment was laid in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Growth parameters are crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), and net assimilation rate (NAR) were measured, and fresh storage root yield was recorded at harvest.
[Results] Principal component analysis identified traits contributing to genotypic variability. Significant (P < 0.05) genotypic differences were observed for NAR in both seasons, while CGR and RGR varied between years. Umuspo 1 shows the highest CGR, NAR, and fresh storage root yield across seasons. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed cumulative variances of 90.97% in 2014 and 98.49% in 2015.
[Consideration] Fresh storage root yield positively associated with key growth traits.
[Conclusion]The study reveals strong genetic variability and identifies Umuspo 1 as a high-yielding, early-maturing, and well-adapted genotype for cultivation and breeding on degraded ultisols in southeastern Nigeria.
