Purpose The symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in female children and female adults are more towards inattention and related symptoms compared to male children and adults hyperactivity symptoms. Due to that, female either don’t get diagnosed as much as the male population, or they get misdiagnosed. In countries like Bangladesh, this scenario is even worse, with little to no diagnosis, along with little knowledge regarding the disorder. This study assessed the proportion of ADHD and its associated factors among female university students in Bangladesh.

Method This cross-sectional quantitative study interviewed 259 female university students (>18 years) from Akij College of Home Economics of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. A purposive, non-randomized sampling technique was used in this study, and data were collected via a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire administered via face-to-face interviews. The questionnaire included characteristics related to socio-demography, comorbidity, lifestyle, and the ASRS V1 to estimate the proportion of ADHD.

Results Among 259 respondents, 32.4% showed symptoms of having high ADHD, 22.4% showed symptoms of very high ADHD, 25.5% showed symptoms of mild to moderate ADHD, while 19.7% showed symptoms of low ADHD. Weight change over the last year, amount of sleep over the last month, exercise, amount of money spent on shopping per month, and living conditions of the female students were associated with ADHD.

Consideration Findings should be interpreted in light of the cross-sectional design, and more female students from both public and private universities should be interviewed to better understand the findings. In addition, females from different age groups and occupations should also be considered for further studies.

Conclusion The result obtained from this study only represents a very small fraction of female university student with ADHD in Dhaka, Bangladesh. But then again this finding can be a wake up call for conducting more studies to find the actual scenario in ADHD in female in Bangladesh.
