Purpose: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a major public health concern in Bangladesh, largely driven by unhealthy dietary practices and inadequate nutrition knowledge. University students are at a critical stage of forming lifelong eating behaviors. Female students are particularly important due to their role in household nutrition. This study evaluated dietary knowledge regarding NCD prevention among female university students and identified associated factors.
Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January to June 2025 among 385 female university students in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data were collected using a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire through face-to-face interviews. Dietary knowledge was assessed using 7 items, with total scores ranging from 0–13. Knowledge levels were categorized using percentage cut-offs. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine factors associated with poor knowledge.
Results: Overall, 77% of participants had poor knowledge of preventive diets for NCDs. Poor knowledge was evident regarding dietary risk factors (85.7%) and the protective role of fruit and vegetable intake (83.4%). Students without a family history of NCDs were more likely to have poor knowledge (AOR=2.57, 95% CI:1.54–4.33). Third-year students also showed higher odds of poor knowledge (AOR=2.34, 95% CI:1.18–4.63).
Consideration: Interpretation should consider the cross-sectional design and the urban, female university-based sample, which may limit causal inference and generalizability.
Conclusion: Dietary knowledge regarding NCD prevention was inadequate among female university students. Targeted nutrition education interventions are needed. Findings should be interpreted cautiously due to the cross-sectional design and self-reported data.
