Communicating science for policy

Background / Context
The increasing complexity of contemporary societal challenges, including climate change, public health emergencies, digital transformation, and sustainable development, has highlighted the need for evidence-informed policymaking (think for instance Covid). Scientific research provides critical knowledge that can support decision makers into effective decision-making; however, evidence does not automatically translate into policy action. Policymakers often operate in fast-moving environments shaped by political, social, economic, and institutional considerations, while researchers typically communicate within academic contexts. As a result, the science–policy interface has emerged as an important area of practice, requiring researchers to develop skills that enable them to communicate evidence clearly, engage with diverse stakeholders, and contribute meaningfully to policy discussions.
Key Issues or Challenges

One of the key challenges facing researchers is understanding how evidence is used within policymaking processes. Scientific information is only one of many factors influencing decisions, and research findings must compete with political priorities, resource constraints, public opinion, and competing forms of knowledge. Researchers often struggle to communicate complex or uncertain findings in ways that are relevant and accessible to decision-makers. Additional challenges include identifying the right audiences, selecting appropriate engagement strategies, building trust, and navigating differences in language, expectations, and timelines between scientific and policy communities.

The session draws on the Communicating Science for Policy book project, which brings together international perspectives, practical experiences, and evidence-based approaches to strengthening engagement between researchers and policymakers. The session synthesises key concepts and frameworks from the book.
