The 66th annual conference of Japan Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Welcome message

Greetings

Conference Chair: Takeshi Ebara

(Professor, Department of Ergonomics, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan)

On behalf of the Steering Committee, I am delighted to extend a warm invitation to you for the upcoming 66th JES Conference. The theme for the conference is “Borderless Ergonomics,” where we will explore the idea of dismantling the many "boundaries" surrounding the field of ergonomics. These boundaries take many forms: between specialized disciplines (such as physical, cognitive, and organizational ergonomics), between social participation barriers shaped by socio-cultural differences, including gender, and even between languages that hinder communication. In Kyushu, we aim to host an innovative conference designed to break down these diverse boundaries.

When you remember "Kyushu", many of you may recall the legacy of the Satsuma Clan, which played a pivotal role in shaping modern Japan after the Meiji Restoration of 19th centuries, and the historic Dejima Island in Nagasaki. Dejima was a small artificial island where, during Japan's period of national isolation (1639-1854), limited contact with foreign traders, especially the Dutch, was allowed. It became Japan's primary point of contact with the outside world during this era, which is often referred to as the “Edo period.” Trade and exchange of knowledge through Dejima were crucial for Japan’s eventual opening to the West and its modernization.

The conference will take place in Kita-kyushu, located at the northernmost tip of Kyushu. While it may not be widely known, Kita-kyushu is a gateway to Kyushu, rich in history. In 1901, the government controlled Yawata Steel Works-the first steel mill in Japan-was established here, and the region was a strategic hub for land and sea transportation during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, all of which were instrumental in Japan's transformation into a modern nation.

In the spirit of this historic evolution, we aim to host the annual conference in a way that reflects our commitment to eliminating boundaries in a place like Kyushu, which has long been a crucible for breaking down boundaries and ushering in new eras.

We eagerly look forward to your participation!
