Urban temperatures have increased markedly due to two phenomena: localised heat islands and global warming. Cities are at very high risk of heat-related health impacts, as population density increases exposure to high temperatures, compounded by vulnerabilities such as an ageing population and a lack of access to or use of air conditioning. To mitigate these risks, the research field of urban climate focuses on reproducing and projecting urban-specific climates, as well as evaluating climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. The process-based urban canopy building energy model has been developed for such projection and evaluation. This presentation focuses on the development of the Urban Canopy Building Energy Model and outlines research conducted by the presenters using this model.
- Process-based modelling of urban climate and building energy
- Validation of the above model using big data on electricity consumption from the Greater Tokyo Area
- Future projections of urban air temperature and electricity consumption
- Evaluation of urban climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies
- Assessment of the impact of solar panel deployment in urban areas on urban air temperature
