The myths recorded in the Kojiki are understood as narratives integrated from different periods and preserved through oral tradition as cultural devices transmitting knowledge across generations. Recent geoscientific studies have shown that symbolic narratives and songs can retain long-term environmental knowledge consistent with climatological, volcanological, and historical records.
While individual Kojiki myths have been interpreted as symbols of natural phenomena, the mythological sequence as a whole has rarely been examined in relation to environmental history. This study proposes a hypothesis that the sequence of myths from the land-creation narratives to the Izumo myths reflects stages of Holocene environmental change.
