How will climate change affect our daily lives? Can reducing greenhouse gas emissions alone solve climate-related problems? What can we do to protect our lives?
In addition to mitigation, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation has become essential to reduce damage from ongoing and future climate impacts. Adaptation refers to actions that prepare for and reduce climate-related risks.
For example, using air conditioning to prevent heatstroke and establishing community cooling shelters are adaptation measures. Climate change impacts are not limited to rising temperatures. Warmer spring conditions can accelerate plant growth and advance flowering of cherry trees and fruit crops. However, sudden cold events following early growth can increase the risk of frost damage to agriculture. These impacts vary by region and sector, highlighting the importance of locally tailored adaptation strategies.
In Japan, where regional climate differences are large, adaptation measures must consider local characteristics. Recent studies use climate simulations to assess potential impacts and support planning of adaptation strategies.
This presentation introduces projected climate change impacts and examples of adaptation measures in Japan, and discusses how climate information supports disaster risk reduction, urban planning, and agriculture.
