Our high school science club team, which has been conducting joint experiments, has been advancing experiments using a variable gravity apparatus. We created Mars' surface gravity and Moon's surface gravity. We also created gravity levels ranging from 0G (microgravity) to 1G (Earth gravity). Using these gravity levels, we have conducted various experiments.
The apparatus's principle is based on Atwood's machine. The falling capsule and the rising capsule are connected by a wire. The wire is looped through two pulleys, each with an 8cm diameter, fixed at 1m intervals at the top of the apparatus. By making the falling capsule heavier than the rising capsule, we created 0G (microgravity) to 1G (Earth gravity) within the falling capsule. The total height of the apparatus is approximately 2.5m. The falling capsule was caught by a large bead cushion. This was used to prevent the falling capsule from bouncing upon landing, to maintain a horizontal posture, and to absorb the impact of the fall. The rising capsule was caught by a nylon net stretched across the top of the apparatus. Care was taken to thread the wire through the mesh openings to avoid contact.
This system has been used to generate gravities simulating Mars' surface gravity and the Moon's surface gravity within the falling capsule. This time, by swapping the roles of the falling capsule and the rising capsule within this variable gravity apparatus, we attempted to generate gravity exceeding 1G. The experimental space was changed from the falling capsule to the ascending capsule. The gravity G generated inside the rising capsule is given by G = g + a, where g is gravitational acceleration and a is the capsule's acceleration. Therefore, within the rising capsule, it is possible to generate gravity exceeding Earth's surface gravity.
Centrifugal acceleration apparatus using rotational motion are already in practical use for astronaut training and fighter pilot training. We believe our apparatus can offer another new method.
This report details the path of improvements leading to this apparatus and the generation of gravity exceeding 1G.
