This study investigates how the geographical environment of Hachioji City affects clouds, specifically focusing on how these clouds influence sunset skies, with particular attention to the cloud formation process. I formulated the following hypotheses: regarding topographical factors, that clouds develop due to the mountainous terrain to the west of Hachioji City and may be less likely to turn red; and regarding meteorological factors, that when typhoons or similar weather systems approach, the sky in the direction of their approach may turn red. Based on these hypotheses, I conducted observations over a two-week period in the summer. I examined the types of clouds observed, their causes, and whether they contributed to the sunset. The results showed that, in terms of topographical factors, clouds that developed due to the mountainous terrain west of Hachioji City sometimes transformed into other types of clouds, making them more prone to turning reddish than the original clouds. Regarding meteorological factors, I found that when a typhoon or similar weather system began to approach, the clouds tended to turn a reddish hue more easily than usual, regardless of the direction of the sky. Moving forward, it would be desirable to establish objective criteria for evaluating sunsets and clouds, as well as to conduct surveys in other seasons and locations.
