The apparent size of the Moon varies with its altitude; however, measurements of its angular size show that it remains nearly constant regardless of altitude. Various explanations have been proposed for this phenomenon, one of which is the Ponzo illusion, in which the perceived size of an object is distorted by comparison with background features. Based on this background, the present study aims to identify the principal factors underlying the perception of the Moon’s size. To this end, we construct hypotheses based on continuous observations of the full Moon and examine the mechanisms of visual illusion through laboratory experiments. In this presentation, we report that analyses of observational data and questionnaire surveys confirm that the perceived size of the Moon depends on its altitude, and we present findings that will inform future investigations of the underlying illusion mechanisms.
