In the Enshu region of Japan, a strong, dry westward-leaning seasonal wind known as Karakkaze frequently blows during winter. This study aims to elucidate why this wind is observed as a strong westward-leaning wind in the coastal area of western Shizuoka Prefecture, with particular focus on the influence of surrounding topography.

First, meteorological data from 22 observation sites across five prefectures in the Chubu region were analyzed over the past 20 years (January–March) to determine mean wind speeds and prevailing wind directions. Second, wind tunnel experiments were conducted using a topographic model simulating the Nobi Plain, Ise Bay, and the Mikawa Mountains, and changes in wind speed and direction around the Hamamatsu area were measured. In addition, numerical simulations were performed to validate the experimental results.

The results suggest that the Nobi Plain and Ise Bay act as pathways for the seasonal winds, while airflow is deflected and flows around the Mikawa Mountains. Consequently, strong westward-leaning winds are likely to prevail in the Hamamatsu area.
