Lunar selenography began in 1609, when Galileo first turned a telescope toward the Moon. Kepler and others believed that the dark regions on the lunar surface were seas and named them mare (plural maria) in Latin. Many of the lunar topographical names in use today were proposed by Riccioli and Hevelius, and most of these features were named in Latin, which was the official language of the Holy Roman Empire at the time. Consequently, an examination of the appropriateness of their pronunciations using a Latin–Japanese dictionary revealed that many inappropriate Japanese translations exist.
