[U04-01]Re-envisioning the Roles of Science Stakeholders for a Future Sustainable Research Ecosystem★Invited Papers

To propel the ecosystem supporting next-generation scientific research, it is essential for diverse stakeholders—including researchers, academic societies, the research community, publishers, funding agencies, and data repositories—to collaborate by leveraging their respective roles and strengths. As evidenced by recent global initiatives to enhance data resilience, the importance of community-led projects for securing repository stability and infrastructure support from funding agencies has reached an unprecedented level. These stakeholders are no longer merely part of the external environment; they function as dynamic players that define the very nature of science.
A primary example of this influence is seen in the publication policies adopted by publishers and journals. Increasingly, journals tend to mandate the sharing of underlying data as a prerequisite for peer review. Coupled with the Japanese government’s policy on immediate Open Access (OA) for scholarly articles, research institutions and universities now face an urgent need to organize and share research data, hopefully aligned with the FAIR data principles. Such editorial policies fundamentally influence how researchers shape their manuscripts and plausibly design and frame their original research plans. Similarly, research funding agencies explicitly expected academic outcomes through their grant application guidelines, effectively steering the direction of applicants’ scientific activities.
Furthermore, academic societies play a crucial role in setting the venues and trends for reporting research results. The configuration of conference sessions and the framework of calls for session/paper proposals can significantly impact how researchers prepare their paper presentations and, in some cases, how they formulate their research questions for their audience. It is suggested from my observations that in their daily activities, researchers are often not fully conscious of the impact exerted by the policies and actions of the stakeholders outside their host institutions or research performing bodies. However, to ensure the improvement of the future academic research ecosystem which are expected to be more resilient and sustainable about research outputs, appropriate governance and cooperative frameworks tailored to the explicit, potential, and even future-creating needs of each academic field are indispensable.
The status and actions of the science stakeholders beyond research performing institutions have the potential to profoundly influence the essence of academic research, planning, and publications/dissemination. Consequently, researchers should not remain passive participants who merely follow predetermined frameworks and rules. As scientists responsible for the future of scientific and scholarly research, it is vital to reassess the roles and relationships of all stakeholders to approach the ideal scientific landscape. Researchers must keep conscious of this significance and proactively engage in broader discussions, including the construction of collaborative frameworks, the enhancement of the reliability and sustainability of scholarly outputs including papers, data, software, samples/specimen and others, and the development of framework of research assessment of in future generation.
