[U14-P01]Hands-On CubeSat Signal Reception Workshops Using Low-Cost Cardboard Yagi Antennas

In recent years, the application of small satellites, such as CubeSats, to geoscience and space education has attracted increasing global attention. The KOSEN-1 CubeSat, developed by the National Institute of Technology (hereafter referred to as KOSEN), has been transmitting continuous waves while orbiting the Earth since 2021. The development of a low-cost and reliable antenna for receiving these signals from amateur satellites such as KOSEN-1 is an important technical and educational challenge. In 2023, we conducted four hands-on manufacturing workshops in which KOSEN students and the general public could build cardboard Yagi antennas. Each workshop consisted of antenna construction and practical reception of radio signals transmitted from KOSEN-1. In this presentation, we report an overview of these workshops and presents an evaluation based on questionnaire responses collected from the participants. Also, we show some of the recent educational efforts using the cardboard Yagi antennas in Japan and Czechia.
