Research and technological development to identify disaster risks have been widely advanced, especially for landslides. Research results on geological and topographical conditions successfully yielded various maps showing the disaster risks. However, this information does not necessarily lead to direct action of the public. Also, changes in the natural and social environment, such as global warming, possible huge earthquakes, and aging populations, have brought new challenges regarding disasters. In order to overcome this problem, the concept of "disaster risk cognition and reduction” has been proposed by Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University.

Disaster risk cognition and reduction aims for each citizen to be aware of possible disaster risks and to prepare for the unprecedented natural disasters as his or her own responsibility. In order to realize this concept, we are attempting to find ways to communicate with non-expert communities. In the village with the rice field heritage on the landslide in Shikoku region, southwest Japan, the project is ongoing to work together with local people to think of ways to protect the village and the heritage from disasters, referring to the observation data on landslide movement (Yamasaki et al., 2026). In the mountainous regions in Suwa city, central Japan, collaboration among government, industry, academia, and local residents is being attempted to enhance community disaster resilience through joint on-site survey and workshops (Matsuzawa et al., 2026). For high school students and university freshmen taking science courses who do not study earth science in the high school curriculums, earth science and disaster mitigation classes utilizing physics are trying to be held both in the high school and university.
