[U15-P01]Challenge for natural disaster mitigation -now and past- (Invitation for U-15)

This presentation will provide an overview of the U-15 session "Utilization of information related to various natural disasters: Integration and development for damage reduction". Throughout long history of humankind, we have survived in severe environments and conquered various natural disasters by using ingenuity. We have learned the annual cycle of climate change in each region, and to respond against terrible natural phenomena as "disasters" that occur at longer and irregular intervals. Over the course of our history, we have learned where we should live on, how strong houses we should build, and how to store food. Ancient people thought natural disasters were "the works of God" and feared, but now their reasons of their occurrence and their process have been scientifically elucidated, observed, and inform to the public. This is a treasure of human that has been accumulated to protect human lives and society from natural disasters. This session was designed to examine the technologies and their utilization for obtaining information to protect oneself from various natural disasters, transcending differences in time and region, with the aim of improving future disaster prevention and mitigation activities.
The session consists of four main components. First, we will introduce cutting-edge technologies for observing individual natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons, as well as their utilization. In this part, we will not only introduce the technical improvement of observation, but also we would like to discuss how this huge information can be analyzed and communicated to society as quickly as possible. Secondly, we will focus on complex and chain-reaction natural disasters, with case studies on the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake and the heavy rain disaster that occurred in the same area in the same year. The third element is to introduce examples from Japan and abroad of natural disaster memorial monuments that people of the past left behind to pass on information about natural disasters to future generations. Finally, as the fourth element, we will introduce research that analyzes this information and connects it to disaster mitigation. At the end of the oral session, there will be a panel discussion that will include comments on these disaster prevention and mitigation efforts from an engineering perspective.
