The narrow-gap semiconductor Mg2X (X = Si, Ge, Sn) has long attracted attention as an environmentally benign thermoelectric material with a relatively large Seebeck coefficient S at room temperature. However, their high thermal conductivity κ has been a bottleneck in improving thermoelectric properties. We have reduced κ by using group IV mixed-crystalline GeSiSn thin films and demonstrated high thermoelectric properties. In the present study, we have conducted research with the ultimate goal of synthesizing Mg2(SiGeSn) and demonstrating its thermoelectric properties.
