Recently, hot-carrier-based reactions have attracted much attention because they can lower reaction temperatures. Hot carriers can be generated by voltage application to tunnel junctions. Such tunnel-junction-based reactions have been induced using scanning tunnelling microscope tips, which are localized just under the tips in most cases. In this study, large-area tunnel junctions were fabricated using RuO2 nanosheet thin films with atomically thin bodies, which minimized the decay of hot carriers and led to the successful induction of methane dissociation reactions.
