The effect of plasma on intercellular signaling was investigated by exposing macrophages to the cytokine IFN-γ, an immune cell activator, with oxygen plasma and examining changes in cell number. A porous membrane plasma source was used to effectively act reactive species on cytokines. It was shown that the induction of intercellular signaling by changes in cytokines by oxygen plasma could be used to regulate immune cell activity.
