Welcome to the 59th Annual Meeting of JSDB in Hiroshima!

We are pleased to announce that the 59th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Developmental Biologists (JSDB) will be held from June 9 to 12, 2026, in the heart of Hiroshima City.

As we approach the quarter-century mark of the 21st century, the field of developmental biology has undergone profound transformations. Technological advancements in imaging and genomic analysis have given rise to two major research streams: one centered on embryonic cellular biology, and the other on genome biology. The former has embraced mathematical modeling and genome editing to uncover phenomena previously unimaginable, while the latter has expanded beyond traditional model organisms, integrating evolutionary biology and informatics to establish experimental evolutionary developmental biology.

Although these streams may appear distinct, recent innovations?particularly in single-cell analysis?are fostering their convergence. This conference will feature keynote lectures by leading scientists in both genome biology and cellular biology. An educational lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the society’s history and future directions. Additionally, a bioresource workshop covering both animal and plant models will be held as a special program.

What new scientific horizons might emerge when the boundaries between genome biology and cellular biology, and between model and non-model organisms, are dissolved? We hope this conference will serve as a platform to explore the future of developmental biology as an integrated and comprehensive scientific discipline.

This year’s meeting is held in collaboration with the French Society for Developmental Biology. In a time when global trends increasingly lean toward division rather than unity, we believe that mutual respect and international collaboration are essential for the advancement of basic sciences, including developmental biology. Hosting this international conference in Hiroshima?a global symbol of peace?holds deep significance. Educational lectures will be conducted in Japanese only; all other sessions will be held in English as the official language.

Hiroshima offers a rich array of cultural and natural attractions, from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the World Heritage Site of Miyajima, to the scenic islands of Eta-jima and Kurahashi-jima in the Seto Inland Sea. We look forward to sharing scientific discussions with you in this beautiful city, where lush greenery lines the rivers and history meets nature.

第59回日本発生生物学会大会は、2026年6月9日（火）～12日（金）に広島市JMSアステールプラザにおいて開催されます。

21世紀を迎えて四半世紀が経ちますが、この間に発生生物学は大きく変化してきました。イメージング解析技術とゲノム解析技術の進歩は、それぞれ発生生物学の中に胚を対象とした細胞生物学研究とゲノムバイオロジー研究という二つの流れを生みました。細胞生物学研究は数理モデル解析やゲノム編集技術を取り入れて、20世紀には思いもつかなかった様々な現象を明らかにしました。ゲノムバイオロジー研究はその対象を非モデル種まで拡げて進化学と融合し、インフォマティクスやゲノム編集技術を取り入れて、進化発生生物学を実験科学として発展させました。このように、一見は二つの流れに分かれた発生生物学ですが、昨今はシングルセル解析技術等の発展により、両者の融合が進みつつあると思われます。

本大会では基調講演者にゲノムバイオロジー研究と細胞生物学研究のトップサイエンティストを迎えます。教育講演においては、本学会の現在に至る歴史と未来を俯瞰していただきます。動物から植物までを対象としたバイオリソースワークショップも大会長企画として開催いたします。ゲノムバイオロジーと細胞生物学、モデル種と非モデル種の垣根が無くなった先には、どのような地平が広がるのでしょうか。本大会を、発生生物学がより大きな総合科学として発展する可能性を俯瞰する場にしたいと考えております。

また本大会は日仏発生生物学会の共催大会として開催します。残念ながら、昨今の国際情勢においては、融合よりも分断の動きが顕著になってきています。発生生物学を含む基礎科学の発展には、何よりも国際的な相互リスペクトと融合が欠かせません。そのような意味において、平和のシンボルである広島で、国際大会を開催することには大きな意義があると思っております。教育講演のみ日本語で開催し、それ以外は全て英語を公用語として開催します。

広島には、広島平和記念資料館から世界遺産・日本三景の宮島、更に足を伸ばせば瀬戸内の多島美を魅せる江田島や倉橋島等、日本の歴史と自然を感じさせる見どころが豊富です。川面に緑が溢れる美しい街で皆様とサイエンスを共有できることを楽しみにしております。
