“The Regional Expansion of Higher Education: From High School–University Collaboration to Lifelong and Reskilling Education”
Amid a declining birthrate, an aging population, and ongoing changes in the industrial structure, the importance of developing human resources to support sustainable regional development is growing. Universities are expected to provide learning opportunities to a wide range of people—from high school students to working adults—and to serve as centers of knowledge open to the local community. This symposium will share a variety of practical examples, including high school–university collaborative education, the development of specialized professionals to support local communities, university-led community-based education, and corporate reskilling initiatives. By taking a broad view of the learning journey—from high school students’ first steps in education to working adults’ continuing education—we will explore models for human resource development through collaboration among local communities, universities, and businesses, and consider how to realize a cycle of learning rooted in the local community.
