[09コ-ポ-49] A Study on Staff Attitudes and Challenges Regarding the Organization of Sporting EventsFocusing on the Dodgeball Tournament Held at the Children's Center

Children’s centers in Minami Ward, Sapporo, provide after-school supervision and guidance for elementary school students and regularly host a variety of sports and cultural events throughout the year. However, due to recent trends showing children’s declining interest in physical activity and sports, as well as the increasing burden on staff involved in organizing events, questions have arisen regarding the future of the dodgeball tournament, which has been held continuously for many years. Therefore, this study surveyed 41 staff members at children’s centers involved in organizing dodgeball tournaments to investigate the content, initiatives, and reflections regarding these events, with the aim of gaining insights into areas for improvement and the necessity of continuing the tournaments. In this study, data collected from the participants was qualitatively analyzed using the KH Coder software to examine the operational tasks, initiatives, and reflections of the staff involved in the dodgeball tournaments. The results of this study revealed that, in their reflections, experienced staff members highlighted the need to set specific goals for participating children—such as “teamwork” and “leadership development”—as well as the importance of “division of labor” among staff members. On the other hand, staff members with less experience expressed feelings of pressure and burden regarding “specialized instruction” and “refereeing skills.” Furthermore, regarding the factors necessary to continue holding the dodgeball tournament in the future, items such as “collaboration with universities,” “staff information sharing,” and “cooperation and collaboration” were identified. Other issues highlighted included a shortage of participants in clubs at each children’s center and transportation problems related to bus travel, driven by rising living costs. Moving forward, we intend to implement measures to address the identified issues and challenges and continue our deliberations to ensure the sustained operation of the dodgeball tournament.
