Moiré superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) twisted van der Waals structures are attracting great interests, owing to the emergence of novel phenomena induced by Moiré potential. As a general understanding, the moiré superlattice has been considered to obey similar structure of original 2D materials, and thus, the dimensionality should be 2D. In this study, we found a new class of moiré superlattice, namely, 1D moiré superlattice. The moiré periodicity is quenched in one direction under particular conditions, so that the moiré superlattice possess the periodicity only along one direction. Using large-angle twisted bilayer WTe2, for example, we succeeded to experimentally demonstrate the formation of 1D moiré superlattice by transmission electron microscopy around twist angles of 62° and 58°. Our theoretical analysis further revealed its intrinsic nature and provided a general understanding of 1D moiré superlattice.
