The Tomlinson model is a model to describe the atomic-scale friction where a solid surface is scanned by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this work, we theoretically studied the stick process based on the Tomlinson model during the scan process with a finite scan velocity and compared it with the numerical simulation. First, the equation of motion of the Tomlinson model was analytically solved during the stick process by rewriting the nonlinear equation of motion as a linear one. Next, the equation was numerically solved by a Runge-Kutta method. The theoretical solution is clearly in very good agreement with the numerical solution.
