[2F08]Fast scan of the chemical structure of PTCDA

We demonstrate fast scans of the chemical structure of molecules by using an optical interferometry technique with Si cantilevers. We used 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecules deposited onto Au(111) substrates as an example of a molecule. The constant-height scans were measured with the second flexural oscillation of a Si cantilever. We then successfully observed the chemical structure of PTCDA molecules at a scan speed of up to around 100 nm/s. The present technique prompts a subsequent examination of fast events such as reactions and diffusions on surfaces.
