Ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted keen attention because they can be applied to a wide range of electrochemical devices. However, the complex diffusion behavior of solutes near the electrode is not fully understood, which hinders their application in devices. In our previous study using operando scanning electrochemical XPS (Scanning EC-XPS) that we developed, we proposed a new diffusion model for metal ions in ionic liquids and clarified that metal ions diffuse by a hopping-like mechanism. Based on this model, we have investigated various diffusion behaviors of metal ions in ionic liquids. In our recent study, we have investigated the influence of the local structure of IL on the diffusion behavior of Ag+ ion in ionic liquid solutions based on our original diffusion model. It was found that the diffusion behavior of Ag+ is largely influenced by the domain structure of ionic liquids and coexisting metal ions.
