[3E16]Analytical examples of lithium-ion battery and solar cell materials using XPS and EDX

Surface and layered structures of lithium-ion battery and perovskite solar cell materials were investigated using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX, ED-XRF). Depth profiling of anode materials after 100 charge–discharge cycles was carried out using Ar gas cluster ion sputtering. The results suggested that the SEI layer on the carbon-coated anode was relatively thinner than that on the uncoated anode. XPS analysis of perovskite solar cell materials indicated that the composition of the perovskite crystal layer, estimated from quantitative measurements, was in good agreement with the designed composition. In addition, EDX thin-film analysis confirmed that the thin-film layers in perovskite solar cells can be evaluated non-destructively within measurement times ranging from several tens of seconds to a few minutes.
