Background / Context
Science diplomacy starts with the acknowledgment that science matters for international relations and, at the same time, is influenced by them. It fosters scientific collaboration also when this is made difficult by conflicts, while tackling competition and concerns over research security. It is more necessary than ever in an increasingly turbulent world.
Science diplomacy matters for women scientists, whether to support their international outreach or help them when among the researchers at risk due to violent conflicts or political persecution. And women have been taking a leading role in its development and helped shaping its practices.
Key Issues or Challenges
The presentation will address some key challenges for science diplomacy – e.g. concerning diversity, access to data and ways to protect researchers at risk- and will discuss what this entails for women and how women contributions can be further enhanced.
Approach / Perspective
The experience of the author in the policy and scientific debate on science diplomacy in Europe (e.g. the European Framework on Science Diplomacy) will be the basis for the presentation. This with the aim to contribute to a broader international effort to foster women leadership in this field as proposed by initiatives such as Women in Science Without Borders.

Key messages: 1) science diplomacy is not a naïve effort to be dropped in the name of geopolitical realism but a necessity for the advancement of science and for science to contribute protecting global public goods; 2) diversity in science diplomacy is as important as diversity in science itself to ensure its quality and context sensitivity; 3) women may disproportionally be affected by attacks on researchers during conflicts and -on the positive side- are active agents of science diplomacy.
