[Purpose]This study aimed to explore and describe the experiences of healthcare providers involved in antenatal care (ANC) service delivery in Tanzania, with a focus on their daily practices, challenges, and professional needs in routine work.
[Method]This study adopted a qualitative descriptive design to gain an in-depth understanding of healthcare providers’ experiences in real working settings. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 16 healthcare providers working in ANC service facilities in Kisarawe District and Bagamoyo District in the Pwani Region. The participants included seven doctors, seven midwives, and two clinical service coordinators, all of whom were locally trained ANC providers. Data collection was conducted in June 2023. Participants were purposively selected based on their involvement in ANC services. The interviews allowed participants to freely express their experiences, perspectives, challenges, and expectations. Informed consent was obtained from all participants prior to the interviews.
[Results]Through thematic analysis, three main themes were identified: (1) healthcare providers’ practices and initiatives in ANC, (2) challenges in delivering ANC services, and (3) motivations for improving ANC services.
[Conclusion]This study provides healthcare providers’ perspectives on ANC services in Tanzania and offers in-depth insights into their experiences. The findings may inform strategies to improve the quality of maternal healthcare services in similar low-resource settings.
