1. Background
International education development research is often practice-oriented, and the relationship between practice and research is close in this field. However, there are also criticisms such as, “How useful is research for practice?” and “What exactly is evidence-based practice?” This suggests that the bridge between practice and research is not functioning adequately. Of course, there are many cases where research and practice do not overlap, and a simplistic attempt to bridge the two can sometimes have negative consequences. However, in recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on short-term, visible, results-oriented approaches and accountability in practice, leading to an increased demand for research that contributes to practice. Researchers are also increasingly recognizing the importance of the relationship between research and practice in advancing their work, resulting in heightened interest and demand for bridging the two.

2. Main points to be discussed
In this roundtable, we would like to ask the presenters to share specific examples of bridging international education development and discuss the obstacles they encounter, their locations, and how they can be overcome. In addition to examples from Japan, we also aim to use comparisons with examples from South Korea to facilitate a more multifaceted discussion.

3. Expected Outcomes of the session
Rather than assuming that bridging will be promoted, the goal is to gain academically and practically useful insights into what methods and approaches to bridging might be effective, what should be considered, and how bridging should be implemented if it is to be promoted in the future. Additionally, within this society, the “Bridge-Building Between Practice and Research in Educational Development” Research Group was established in 2019 and has been deepening discussions through holding study sessions and the publication of special issues in Journal of International Development Studies (Vol. 34, No. 1). This round is to share the results from the activities of this research group.
