In today’s increasingly uncertain world, the emergence and spread of violent extremism remain a major obstacle to progress in peace and development. This roundtable will explore effective approaches to peacebuilding and development, centered on the key findings of the open access book Resilience, Peacebuilding, and Preventing Violent Extremism: A Complex Systems Perspective on Sustaining Peace. The book represents the final outcome of the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development's research project of the same title. By presenting a theoretical and empirical argument that places the emphasis on social cohesion, resilience, and adaptive peacebuilding, this book challenges the conventional security-led approach to countering violent extremism. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the complex drivers of violent extremism, along with recommendations for strengthening social and institutional resilience through peacebuilding and development efforts. Drawing on complexity theory and adaptive peacebuilding, the book provides insights into how complex social systems adapt and respond to stress, and how peacebuilders can support societies in uncertain, volatile, and unpredictable contexts by enhancing their resilience and adaptive capacity to sustain peace.Three of the book contributors, including editors and authors, will participate in this roundtable. They will provide an overview of the book's theoretical framework and key findings, and present case studies from Mozambique, Syria, and Sri Lanka, discussing the complex dynamics of violent extremism and ways to prevent and counter it. Social cohesion, resilience, and adaptive peacebuilding discussed in this book are essential for promoting development and sustaining peace. This roundtable invites scholars and experts specializing in peacebuilding and development as discussants. Through dialogues among the book contributors, discussants, and audience, this roundtable aims to deepen our understanding of the challenges posed by violent extremism, revisit the concepts and practices of peace and development, and explore new approaches to addressing these issues.
