Gender inequality in the world of work persists across the world despite decades of efforts in advancing gender equality in the world of work in development. Women suffer from higher decent work deficits, such as unemployment, working poverty, NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), and often informality in employment than men especially in poorer developing regions. This is due to a higher burden of unpaid care work on women and gender-based discrimination in the world of work. The world is faced with multiple crises: wars, natural disasters caused by climate change, as well as inflation which are further being heightened by the increased tariffs imposed by the US. Such crises also impact on the world of work, and women tend to take the blunt of negative impacts, regardless of type of crises. Goal 5 - Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls is one of the key SDGs, and “Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and full and productive employment and decent work for all is Goal 8. These goals are intrinsically closely linked to Goal 1 - End poverty in all forms everywhere. Under the SDGs framework, the paper aims analyse gender dimensions of the world of work, and explore policy options to promote gender equality in the world of work with focusing on developing regions. After the introduction, part two reviews relevant literature regarding gender and the world of work. Part three analyses trends in the world of work with a gender lens. Part four reviews the impact of multiple crises on the world of work. Part five explores policy options and measures to promote gender equality in the world of work, and the paper ends with conclusion.
