The development of near-infrared (NIR) dyes is inevitable for further improvement in the PCE of DSSCs by wide wavelength photon harvesting from the visible-NIR region. In this work, four novel NIR-sensitive unsymmetrical squaraine dyes (SQ), SQ-258, SQ-259, SQ-260 and SQ-261 substituted with π-conjugated moieties (1,3-indandione and cyano-acrylic acid), either in the central squaric acid core, or in the anchoring group, or both, were synthesized and subjected to photophysical characterizations to validate their suitability as sensitizers for DSSCs. The newly designed unsymmetrical squaraine dyes exhibit sharp, intense and narrow absorption of light in the far-red to NIR region associated with p-p* electronic transition along with slightly blue-shifted vibronic shoulder associated with H-aggregation. At the same time, pi-conjugated substituents either in the central squaric acid core (SQ-259) or, in the anchoring group (SQ-260) or, both (SQ-261) lead to a bathochromic shift in the absorption maxima (λmax) of the dyes.
