Heavy metals, which are known to be inorganic irritant poisons and pose a threat to human health. The detection and removal of heavy metals from drinking water are of significant importance. To address this, we synthesized florescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) capable of simultaneously detecting Fe3+ and As3+ ions in real samples.CQDs were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal technique using medicinal leaves as a precursor at 160 deg. the CQDs underwent characterization using a variety of optical and physical techniques like HRTEM, UV-VIS, PL, ZETA, XRD, XPS and FTIR etc, Which confirm the quantum size and tremendous functionality of the synthesised nano structure.
The PL spectra of CQDs shows the emission at 410 nm. Which has been used for selective detection of arsenic and iron in aqueous solution. Subsequence addition of Fe3+ leads the quenching of PL while addition of As3+ enhanced the PL intensity. Which make it efficient dual probe turn ‘ON’ and turn ‘OFF’ fluorometric sensor. Additionally synthesized CQDs show exceptional biocompatibility and used for bioimaging. It also exhibited antiradical activity with the IC50 value of 0.155 mg/mL against DPPH.
