Besides the energetical issue, spatial distribution in the bulk heterojunction layer of the second donor (D2) with a shallower HOMO level plays a crucial role to determine the device performance of ternary blend polymer solar cells (donor (D1)/D2/acceptor (A)). In this study, the spatial distribution of D2 is discussed in terms of charge carrier accumulation and transport network growth by directly visualizing D2 distribution under the selective excitation or 740-nm light. The photocurrent distribution by D2 suggests well-developed charge transport. However, the height vs photocurrent histogram shows that the higher regions generate higher current. While under white irradiation, the photocurrent is generated equally over the surface. This implies the contribution of D1 in the lower regions and results in the photovoltaic parameters showing the values between those of D1/A and D2/A. Consequently, photovoltaic parameters are governed by D2/A when D2 networks are completely developed at 50%D2 ternary blend device.
