To tackle life challenges existing in our current society, research on sensing technology for solving basic physiology and medicine questions represents one crucial aspect. For instance, ion homeostasis, such as balanced concentrations of ions including Na+, K+, and Cl- in vivo, regulates key cell functions. Particularly, the dysregulation of ions in the nervous system underlies various pathological conditions including seizures, etc. However, we currently lack efficient and reliable neural ions probes featuring high biocompatibility, sensitivity, miniaturization, and flexibility. In this study, versatile thermal drawing, laser machining and multi-ionophore functionalization process were combined to develop a new type of multi-ion (Na+, K+, and Cl-) monitoring fiber with the potential as a neural probe for the research on ion homeostasis in the brain.
