Passive radiative cooling (PRC) involves spontaneous heat emission by an object as a thermal radiation into the outer space – an innovative and environmentally sustainable energy-efficient cooling technology that reduces the electrical energy consumption for cooling purposes. PRC is now in the global research limelight. The night-time radiative cooling can be achieved by attaining high emissivity of an object or surface in the mid-infrared band. In this context, VO2 possesses significant advantages in passive radiative cooling due to its phase-changing attributes. At low temperatures of < 68ºC, VO2 exhibits high emissivity within the atmospheric window, whereas at elevated temperatures, it has low emissivity but high reflectance. The potential of VO2 in passive radiative cooling needs to be further explored for effective and practical industrial use. This study aims at presenting the emissivity of a specially designed VO2-assisted metasurface and its overnight radiative cooling performance. The obtained results indicate a significant reduction in temperature, thereby determining the configuration to be of potential in PRC system applications.
